Hair loss is totally normal. It is part of our everyday life. On average, we lose 50 to 100 strand’s a day.
It is always good to check on your hair especially when you wash it, brushing or combing it. This will give you a hint when you are in danger of abnormal hair loss.
I will walk you through some possible causes of hair loss in women.
DIFFERENT CAUSES OF HAIRLOSS AND POSSIBLE TRIGGERS
There are different causes of hair loss. These include;genetic and reactive. They range from;
hormonal imbalance, extreme stress, Iron deficiency, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, vitamin B12 efficiency, dramatic weight loss, age, ringworm, childbirth, the pill, tight hair styles, cancer treatment among others.
There could be a chance that you are genetically predisposed to hair thinning. If so, you will be able to realize or note a progressive gradual reduction in your hair volume.
At this time of progressive gradual reduction in hair volume says Anabel, certain hair follicles are sensitive to male hormones. This sensitivity causes follicles to gradually shrink and produce slightly finer and shorter hairs with each passing hair growth cycle.
This means that the hair loss of the individual is the result of a trigger. Excessive daily hair shedding is known as telogen effluvium.
This hair loss does not occur as a result of genetic predisposition, but occurs as the result of an internal imbalance or upset such as nutritional deficiency, severe stress, crash dieting or illness says Anabel.
When we consider possible causes of hair loss in women, there are so many triggers, hence it becomes tricky to pinpoint the exact reason why your hair is falling out.
Anabel Kingsley, a leading Trichologist at the Phillip Kingsley Clinic in London says that hair loss is a very common problem in women.
Research has this to say-At least one in every three women will suffer from hair loss or reduced hair volume at some point in their lifetime.
HOW MUCH HAIR LOSS IS NORMAL?
Do not be scared if you find some hair in your comb or hair brush. However, you will need to raise your eyebrows if it begins to fall out in clumps or you notice your hair getting thinner and thinner every time you take a look at it. This is alarming and you may need to check with your doctor.
Hair loss is immeasurable. The doctors use the Savin scale. It ranges from normal hair density to a bald crown. The scale helps document female pattern baldness, a condition the doctor calls androgenic alopecia.
CHILD BIRTH AND AGE IN RELATION TO HAIRLOSS IN WOMEN
Child birth is one of the reasons why a woman may have hair loss. This is because high hormone levels keep the hair from falling out.
After birth when everything goes back to normal, the strand’s fallout quickly and one can lose a lot of hair at once.
If a woman is about to enter their menopause stage or they are already going through it,the changes that their body goes through may have effect on their hair. Towards and after menopause hair loss becomes more prevalent. As we get older, hair naturally gets finer and prone to falling off. This however is a normal part of the aging process.
COMMON TRIGGERS OF HAIR LOSS
A hormonal imbalance can lead to annoying beauty issues. These range from adult acne to weight gain. Hormones play a big role in regulating the hair growth cycles says Anabel. An excess of androgen can cause hair loss.
If you have a genetic predisposition to follicle sensitivity, a hormonal imbalance, this can affect your hair more than it would someone who does not have a predisposition.
Excessive stress can make your hair to fall out. Stress can also trigger scalp problems such as dandruff, disrupt eating habits and mess with the digestive system and all this will have an impact on the woman s hair to cause hair loss
Iron D efficiency
Iron deficiency is one of the most common possible causes of hair loss in women. Iron is essential for producing hair cell protein, without which your hair strand’s will suffer.
Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism
The thyroid gland helps to regulate the body’s metabolism controlling the production of proteins and tissue use of oxygen. Any thyroid imbalance can affect hair follicles says Anabel. Anabel further explains that is hypothyroidism is left untreated, it may result in anemia which is also another condition that can impact the hair.
Vitamin B12 D efficiency
lack of vitamin B12 can make you feel tired and experience low energy. This can also contribute to hair loss in women.
Dramatic weight loss
When you lose your weight dramatically, may be because of sickness or even as you try to control your weight through diet
Hormones that suppress ovulation could cause a woman s hair to fall out. This can happen when one stops taking the pill.
Other drugs that are said to contribute to women hair loss are blood thinners and medicines that treat high blood pressure, heart disease, athritis and depression.
Tight hair styles
Wearing tight ponytails or cornrows can irritate your scalp and cause your hair to fall out.
Also, if you use tight rollers, your hair will fall out.
Loosing hair on your crown can be very stressful for a woman. It impacts negatively on their self-esteem, however it is important to understand that hair loss in women is very common and if you are experiencing hair loss, you are not alone.
There is no need to be embarrassed about it. Long, short, bouncy or sleek hair for most women means a lot. It is an expression of a woman’style and personality.
Whether it is short term or long term, women lose hair same as men do. It might thin allover or at the center part. A woman can even get a bald spot at the crown of her head.
Long term use of hairstyles that stress and irritate your scalp can scar it and can even lead to permanent hair loss.
